A unique Behavior Analytic approach to the care of children & adolescents

The Mentor Program

Purpose:  The mentor program is designed to help each child develop socialization skills with others within the community. While children in foster care often receive the necessary tools for their day-to-day activities the mentor program will provide additional socialization skills necessary to succeed in life.

WHAT IS MENTOR

Mentor is an innovative mentoring program that matches at-risk children in therapeutic foster care with people in the community.  The goal is to provide a healthy caring and         consistent relationship with an adult other than their current providers.  The mentors are not there to replace the foster parent, but instead to work in conjunction with the treatment team to provide the child with additional socialization skills.

The mentor will have the opportunity to expose the child to a wide range of experiences, thus allowing them to explore their talents in music, art, etc.  We will take a comprehensive approach to include all areas of the child’s treatment team to ensure the child is receiving continuity of care.

Each mentor is personally interviewed by the Therapeutic Program Development Specialist before the mentor meets with the child and foster family.  The mentor must successfully complete a background screening by law enforcement and the Department of Children and Families prior to working with a child.   This is a voluntary position.

HOW THE MENTOR

PROGRAM WORKS

The program at Families First of Florida will pair a child in therapeutic foster care with a mentor.   The mentor will be assigned to work with the child 1-2 times a month.  They will work with the child on non-therapeutic activities while maintaining their relationship with their therapist on all therapeutic related matters.
